Free Hex Decoder

Got a hex dump and need the message? The Hex Decoder converts hexadecimal back to readable text, tolerating real-world formatting — spaces, colons, dashes, and 0x prefixes are all ignored. Strict validation catches odd-length or invalid input with clear errors instead of silent garbage.

Spaces, colons, dashes and 0x prefixes are ignored.

Private by design. This tool runs 100% in your browser — your input is decoded locally and never uploaded or stored anywhere.

How to Use the Hex Decoder

  1. Paste your hex string.
  2. The decoded text appears live.
  3. Invalid hex shows a clear error.
  4. Click Copy to use the result.

Features

Live decoding; format-tolerant input; strict hex validation; UTF-8 decoding with error reporting; copy button.

Benefits & Use Cases

Decode hex-encoded API fields, inspect packet captures, reverse hex dumps from logs, or verify what a hex string actually contains.

Tips

If decoding succeeds but the text looks wrong, the bytes may use a different encoding (like Latin-1) rather than UTF-8 — the tool will tell you when bytes aren't valid UTF-8.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why "invalid hex" for my input?

Hex needs an even number of digits from 0–9/A–F. An odd digit count or stray characters (after ignoring separators) triggers the error — check for a missing leading zero.

Do I need to remove spaces first?

No. Spaces, colons, dashes, newlines and 0x prefixes are stripped automatically, so you can paste hexdumps directly.

What does "not valid UTF-8" mean?

The hex decoded to bytes fine, but those bytes do not form valid UTF-8 text — the original data was probably binary or another encoding.

Can it decode an entire hexdump?

Yes, as long as it is contiguous hex. Address columns and ASCII sidebars from tools like xxd should be removed first.
